According to the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Wicca and Witchcraft (Amaranth, 2000), this moon is known as the Storm, Death or Quickening moon. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Storm moon occurs at a time of long nights and dark days, making it a good time of year to do magick for accepting challenges and perseverance.
Ant Spirit Guide
Funny as it may sound, an excellent animal spirit to call upon for inspiration at this time is the ant. This tiny creature has proven itself to be of mighty strength and persistence. Ants are able to lift five times their own body weight, carry such weights great distances and work tirelessly for the good of the entire colony.
In the handbook Medicine Cards (St. Martin’s Press, 1999), ant medicine, or ant energy is described as one of patience, community-mindedness, deliberation and trust in the Universe to provide.
February Full Moon Meditation
The February full moon is a time to focus on exactly these energies. Below is a simple but powerful visualization in which the ant spirit guide is invoked. This meditation can be done around the time of the full moon, either in a group or alone.
Find a quiet and comfortable spot and allow about ten minutes to complete this activity.
- Relax your mind and body. Focus on breathing naturally and smoothly. Allow the thoughts that come into your mind to depart, leaving a quiet, dark and safe space within. Feel the earth beneath you and the universe above you.
- Imagine yourself on a path in some woods. The path is clear and lit by the light of the moon. It is safe and you are amazed by how much the full moon lights the night scene before you.
- Walk along the path, paying close attention to any animals, rocks, or plants that stand out. They will have significance and you will be able to remember them later and think about what they mean to you.
- Up ahead you see a space or a clearing to sit down in. Sit down and breathe in the smells of the forest.
- Bring to mind a challenge of yours - something that you will be requiring strength and patience for. It may be a relationship, a work situation, a health issue…just allow whatever comes to you to be. Hold this in your mind for a moment.
- In front of you, notice a tiny little ant coming towards you. This is a special little ant. Welcome him into your space and feel happy knowing he has come just for you.
- Allow some time to communicate with this ant. He may provide guidance for you regarding your challenge. He may speak, or give you feelings, perhaps even a gift. You can ask questions.
- When you are finished communicating with the ant, thank him and say goodbye. Make your way slowly back down the path.
- Slowly bring your conscious mind back to the present, knowing that you can visit with your special ant any time.
Invoking ant medicine during the time of the February full moon is a great way to connect with the inner characteristics of strength and courage that are required by trying and challenging situations.
